Autonomy through Cyberjustice Technologies (ACT)

We are inviting three (3) young researchers to participate in a panel devoted to the socio-technical, legal and political issues of AI and digital technologies in the field of justice. It will be held as part of the Autonomy through Cyberjustice Technologies (ACT) Annual Conference, on October 16, 2025 at Université de Montréal.
ABOUT THE ACT PROJECT
This conference marks the end of the ACT partnership, an international research project led by Professor Karim Benyekhlef, Director of the Cyberjustice Laboratory. Funded by the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), ACT has assembled since 2018 a team of over 52 researchers and 44 partners representing a number of different stakeholders including the world’s leading research centres on the implementation and use of technologies in the field of justice. litigants and legal professionals, as well as main users and purveyors of AI for justice in Canada.
The goal of the partnership: leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to benefit justice stakeholders to prevent and resolve conflicts.
ABOUT THE 2025 CONFERENCE
This conference is part of the ACT project's scientific and knowledge dissemination activities, and will be attended by researchers, legal professionals and the Cyberjustice Laboratory's partners, the event's host. This year, we aim to showcase Canada’s leadership in the fields of artificial intelligence and technological innovation within the justice system, while facilitating critical discussions on key issues in line with the ACT project: What did we learn? What did we miss? Where are we heading?
THE YOUNG RESEARCHERS PANEL: AI&Tech, Justice AND POLICY
This Young Researchers panel aims to highlight emerging work that questions the autonomy of judicial actors in the AI era. Presentations and discussions will take place in English.
Presentations may address, but are not limited to:
- the regulation of AI in the justice system;
- the governance of AI;
- the ethical and technical challenges of introducing digital technologies into judicial proceedings;
- critical or interdisciplinary perspectives on AI and justice.
CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
Travel and accommodation expenses for the three selected participants will be covered by the ACT project.
CRITERIA
- Eligibility: Master's, doctoral or post-doctoral students.
- Compliance with the theme: “AI&Tech, Justice and Policy”
- Documents to be submitted:
- A paper (maximum 3 pages) related to the panel theme, in French or English;
- A short academic CV (maximum 2 pages).

- Submission of applications: by July 31, 2025
- Notification of results: August 31, 2025
- Panel date: October 16, 2025
